Home > Corn Breads > Hushpuppies Recipe
Hushpuppies are a distinctly Southern food. They are small cornmeal breads that are deep fried in a round or oblong shape. They are usually made of cornmeal, flour, eggs, salt, baking soda, milk, and water; however, they can also include whole kernel corn, onions, and peppers.
Here is a traditional recipe from our family. Enjoy!
Hushpuppies Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 cup cornmeal
pinch of salt and soda
1 egg
Buttermilk
Directions:
Mix flour, cornmeal and pinch of salt and soda. Add egg and buttermilk until it is the right consistency to hold its shape when rolled into a ball about 1 inch to 2 inches across. Drop into a couple inches of hot oil and cook until golden brown. Set on a paper towel to absorb some of the oil before serving.
Tip: When the oil is hot enough, the hushpuppies will rise to the top.
